The world’s oldest white rhino has died aged 54 in an Italian zoo.

Toby, nicknamed ‘Nonno Toby’ – Grandpa Toby – handed away on October 6 on the Parco Natura Viva zoo close to Verona.

‘He collapsed on the floor on the way back to his nighttime shelter, and after about half an hour, his heart stopped,’ zookeeper Elisa Livia Pennacchioni instructed news businesses.

Toby will likely be embalmed and placed on show on the MuSe science museum in Trento, the place he’ll be a part of Blanco, a white lion from the zoo who died 5 years in the past, Pennacchioni mentioned.

White rhinos normally dwell as much as about 30 years within the wild and 40 years in captivity, so Toby lived to a ripe outdated age.

The species is listed as Near Threatened – there are estimated to be about 18,000 animals left on this planet though numbers have been rising.

However, there are solely two examples left of the northern white rhino subspecies who dwell in Kenya, that are watched round the clock by armed guards.
